Teeth Thief: Stealing Dead Music Composers’ Teeth

Posted on July 4th, 2012

Two of the world’s most famous composers are now lying in their Austrian graves without their teeth, thanks to a Slovak teeth thief. Ondrej Jajcaj spoke proudly on YouTube about how he is going to use the stolen dentures to begin a museum.

He took the teeth from the tombs of Johann Strauss and Johannes Brahms, both 19th century composers who have graves of honor in the Viennese Central Cemetery. He hopes to use their teeth in an exhibition of hundreds of objects he has pillaged from other graves.

In 2008, Jajcaj was investigated by Vienna prosecutors after cemetery officials reported to the police that cemetery graves had been tampered with. The case was dropped since the statute of limitations ran out.

The dental thefts were brought up again recently when the police heard about the grave robber’s boastful YouTube videos. In May they began an investigation and discovered that the legendary composers’ dentures had been taken from their tombs.

The dastardly dental thief could face six months to 10 years in prison for his teeth stealing. Police hope to charge him with burglary, disturbing the peace of the dead, and other crimes, but it is complicated since he is not Austrian and doesn’t live in Austria.

The graves of other great Viennese composers such as Ludwig von Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Arnold Schoenberg are also being checked to ensure their teeth haven’t been tampered with.

This shows that you should take good care of your teeth. You never know how famous you may end up, and how many people will want to steal your teeth and show them off!
